FAQs
Mobile Notary FAQs
Below are answers to common questions about mobile notary appointments with Riverstone Signature Services.
What is a mobile notary?
A mobile notary travels to the client’s location by appointment to complete notarial acts. This may include appointments at offices, hospitals, care facilities, businesses, or other agreed-upon locations.
What areas do you serve?
Riverstone Signature Services serves Yolo County and the Greater Sacramento Area, including Davis, Dixon, Woodland, West Sacramento, Sacramento, and nearby communities by appointment.
What types of documents can you notarize?
We may be able to notarize documents involving acknowledgments, jurats, oaths and affirmations, power of attorney documents, healthcare directives, trust and estate-related documents, real estate documents, business documents, authorization forms, and other documents requiring notarization. We cannot provide legal advice or determine which document you need.
What ID do I need?
The signer must provide acceptable identification for the notarial act. A current government-issued photo ID is commonly used. If you are unsure whether your ID is acceptable, contact us before the appointment.
Do I need to appear in person?
Yes. The signer must personally appear before the notary for notarization.
Should I sign the document before the notary arrives?
Often, no. Some documents must be signed in front of the notary, especially when a jurat is required. If you are not sure, wait to sign until the notary appointment.
Can you notarize for someone in a hospital or care facility?
Yes, if the signer is alert, willing, aware, able to communicate directly with the notary in English, and has acceptable identification.
Can you notarize for someone with dementia?
Possibly, depending on the signer’s condition at the time of the appointment. A diagnosis alone does not automatically answer the question. The signer must be able to communicate directly with the notary in English, appear willing to sign, and appear aware of the transaction.
Can family members answer questions for the signer?
Family members may help coordinate the appointment, but the signer must communicate directly with the notary in English. The notary cannot rely on another person to answer for the signer.
Who arranges witnesses if they are required?
If witnesses are required, the signer is responsible for arranging for them to be present at the appointment. Riverstone Signature Services does not provide witnesses for signings.
Can you explain my document?
No. Riverstone Signature Services is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice. We cannot explain legal rights, obligations, consequences, or tell you whether you should sign a document.
Can you tell me whether I need an acknowledgment or jurat?
No. The document issuer, receiving agency, or an attorney should tell you what type of notarial act is required. A notary may complete the appropriate certificate when the notarial act is clear, but cannot choose the act for you.
How much does a mobile notary cost?
The total cost depends on the notarial act, number of notarized signatures, appointment location, travel distance, appointment time, and any additional requested services. We try to provide pricing before confirming your appointment.
Do you offer same-day appointments?
Same-day appointments may be available depending on schedule, location, and appointment details. Please call or text to check availability.
Can you notarize documents in another language?
A notary may be able to notarize a signature on a document in another language if the notarial act can be properly completed and the signer can communicate directly with the notary in English.
Can you notarize a blank or incomplete document?
Documents should be complete before notarization. A notary may refuse to notarize if the document is incomplete, contains blank spaces that should be filled in, or creates concern about the transaction.
Does notarization make my document legal?
No. Notarization does not prove that a document is true, legal, valid, or enforceable. A notarization verifies certain elements of the notarial act, depending on the act performed.
How do I schedule?
You can call, text, or submit an appointment request online. Please provide appointment location, preferred date and time, document type, number of signers, number of notarized signatures if known, whether the signer has valid ID, and whether witnesses are required and have been arranged by the signer.
Can I schedule an appointment for someone else?
Yes. Attorneys, adult children, family members, care-facility staff, social workers, case managers, fiduciaries, and other authorized contacts may coordinate an appointment on behalf of a signer.
However, the signer must personally appear before the notary, communicate directly with the notary in English, be willing to sign, and demonstrate an understanding of the transaction at the time of the appointment.
To help us schedule efficiently, please have:
- The signer’s full name
- The appointment address and room or unit number, if applicable
- The preferred date and time
- The type of document
- The number of signers
- The estimated number of notarizations
- The requested notarial act, if known
- Whether acceptable identification is available
- Facility contact and access instructions
- Witness arrangements, if required
- Payment arrangements
The person arranging the appointment may assist with scheduling and logistics, but cannot direct the signer’s answers or pressure the signer to proceed with a notarization.
